Kenya Railways announces temporary closure of Moi Avenue in Mombasa
By Faith Lagat, March 14, 2026Motorists in Mombasa will experience a temporary traffic disruption on Sunday following a notice issued by Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) announcing the closure of a section of Moi Avenue to facilitate emergency repair works.
In a public notice shared on March 13, 2026, the corporation said the affected section will stretch from the Moi Avenue–Tanga Road roundabout to the Moi Avenue–Mogadishu Road roundabout. The closure will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 6:00 am to 10:00 am.
According to Kenya Railways, the temporary closure is necessary to allow scheduled repair works on the Mbaraki Rail Over Road Bridge located along Moi Avenue.
Affected section and repair works
The Mbaraki Rail Over Road Bridge carries a railway line above Moi Avenue, supporting both rail operations and road traffic below.
Kenya Railways said the repairs are part of ongoing efforts to maintain the structure and ensure safety for both motorists and train operations.
The bridge forms part of the railway infrastructure used by commuter train services between Miritini and Mombasa Central Business District, as well as freight trains serving the Port of Mombasa.
Moi Avenue is one of the busiest routes within the city, connecting the central business district with commercial areas and access roads leading to the Kenya Ports Authority facilities.
This latest notice follows a comparable disruption on Sunday, March 1, 2026, also for urgent fixes on the Mbaraki bridge, highlighting ongoing maintenance needs for Mombasa’s aging rail-over-road infrastructure.
Alternative routes for motorists
Kenya Railways has advised motorists to use alternative routes during the four-hour closure period. Drivers travelling from KPA Gate 10 and the docks area have been advised to use Mogadishu Road, Zanzibar Road and Shimanzi Road.
Those accessing KPA Gate 10 and the docks area should use Tangana Road, Mijikenda Street, Lumumba Road and Shimanzi Road.

Motorists have also been advised to follow traffic management arrangements that will be put in place and comply with instructions from police officers and traffic marshals at the site.
Kenya Railways notice
In the public notice, the corporation urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance during the closure period.
“Motorists are further advised to observe traffic management arrangements on site and comply with instructions from police officers and traffic marshals on site,” the notice read.
The corporation also apologised for the inconvenience that may be caused during the repair works.
Kenya Railways said the temporary closure is necessary to allow engineers to carry out essential maintenance aimed at ensuring the safety and reliability of railway infrastructure within the coastal city.
