The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning over expected heavy rainfall and strong winds in several parts of the country as a weakening storm system named Chenge moves toward the East African coast.

According to the department’s statement posted on X on Sunday, October 26, 2025, Chenge is a low-pressure system over the southwest Indian Ocean currently moving westward at a speed of 11 km/h.

“Chenge, a weakening system over the SW Indian Ocean, is moving west at 11 km/h about 500 km north of Madagascar with winds of 55 km/h, gusts up to 75 km/h, and pressure near 1000 hPa,” the department said.

The weatherman noted that the system is expected to lose strength before reaching the mainland, but warned that it will still bring significant rainfall and strong winds to coastal areas and nearby regions. “It’s expected to dissipate near the Tanzania–Kenya coast by Tuesday,” the statement read.

Despite its weakening nature, Chenge is forecast to trigger heavy rains and powerful coastal winds exceeding 25 knots. “Heavy rains are likely over several parts of the country with strong coastal winds exceeding 25 knots,” the department added.

The update has raised concerns among coastal communities and local authorities, who are being urged to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas. Meteorologists have also advised fishermen and residents along the coastline to exercise caution as the weather conditions could disrupt sea transport and fishing activities.

While Chenge is not classified as a major cyclone, the Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor its movement closely, warning that even weakened systems can cause flash floods and wind-related damage if not taken seriously.

Residents are advised to keep following official weather updates as the system approaches the East African coastline in the coming days.
