Kenya Met lists Nairobi among areas to receive heavy rainfall this weekend
The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a five-day weather outlook forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in various regions of the country beginning Friday, February 20, through Monday, February 23, 2026.
Nairobi is among the areas likely to experience intense downpours during this period.
According to the advisory, Nairobi and counties in the Highlands, east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, as well as the Southeastern Lowlands and some coastal areas are expected to experience significant downpours.
The northern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to remain dry and sunny over the same period.

In the Highland East region, rain is forecasted in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
In the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin, counties likely to receive rainfall include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu. Nighttime showers are also expected in these areas, with the pattern repeating throughout the weekend.
Residents in the southeastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the inland Tana River, are advised to prepare for heavy afternoon rains following morning showers and sunny intervals, with nighttime showers.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are expected to see lighter rainfall.
The Department has also forecasted similar heavy rains in Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for thunderstorms and the potential risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Kenya Met has urged residents to exercise caution while commuting and to take all necessary precautions to stay safe, particularly given the risk of flooding.
Heavy rains in these counties would begin mostly in the afternoon after light showers, followed by sunny intervals in the morning, with night showers also expected.
While most parts of the country were projected to receive heavy rains throughout the weekend, the meteorological department forecasted light rains in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
However, the weather department predicted the Northern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo to remain sunny and dry for the next five days.
