Kenya Met issues weather update for Friday, March 20
By Cynthia Lodite, March 20, 2026The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall expected to coincide with Idd-ul-Fitr celebrations.
In a statement on the official Kenya Meteorological Department X account on Friday, March 20, 2026, the weatherman listed three counties that would likely receive moderate to heavy showers.
“Nairobi Metropolitan Rainfall Update – 20 March 2026 The latest KMD 24hr forecast (09:00 today – 09:00 tomorrow) shows moderate to heavy showers in parts of the metro area,” Kenya Met noted.
According to the Weather Department, Kajiado County is expected to receive moderate to heavy showers, with the heavier hotspots being in the northern and western parts of the County.
“Kajiado County: Moderate–heavy showers; heavier hotspots in North & West,” Kenya Met stated.
Similarly, the department said Nairobi County will experience moderate showers and isolated heavey downpour in the western and southern zones.
According to the Meteorological department, the areas likely to experience the heavy downpour in Nairobi include Dagoretti, Kibra, parts of Embakasi, and Langata.
“Nairobi County: Moderate showers widespread; isolated heavier pockets in western/southern zones (Dagoretti, Kibra, parts of Embakasi, Langata),” Met noted.
On the other hand, Met department has predicted moderate to heavy showers in Kiambu County.
According to Weatherman, the North and Western areas of Kiambu, which include Gatundu North, Limuru, Kikuyu and Kabete, shall receive heavy showers
“Kiambu County: Moderate–heavy; notable heavier zones in northern/western areas (Gatundu North, Limuru, Kikuyu, Kabete),” Met said.

Weather advisory
This follows a recent alert from the Kenya Meteorological Department, which has warned that rainfall will intensify from Thursday, March 19, 2026, across several parts of the country as the long rains season begins to strengthen.
In its weekly weather forecast for March 17 to March 23, 2026, released on Monday, March 16, 2026, the department said rains will continue in many regions, with heavier downpours expected later in the week.
“The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall over several parts of the country, with intensity expected to increase from Thursday,” the department said in an update shared on X.
According to the forecast, the rainfall will mainly affect five regions across the country. These include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands and the Coastal region.
