Kenya basketball men’s national team ‘Morans’ beat a resilient Tanzania 95-59 to pick their second victory of the championship and stay level on points with rivals South Sudan.

The hosts ran the scores in the first half, getting to 20-0 in the first quarter against an unsettled Tanzania who had only six players to rotate on the bench. 

The visitors however got their footing in the early minutes of the second quarter as they scored 18 points against Kenya’s 24.

Kenya, who beat Eritrea 112-64 in their first match of the five-day competition, will play Somalia at 6:30 pm today while Eritrea take on Tanzania. Burundi will take on South Sudan. 

Ajou Deng’s South Sudan also picked their second win of the championship after beating Eritrea 111-57 in the early kick off. 

Bol Bak and Nyang Wek were sensational as they top scored for their side with 20 and 15 points respectively.

It was, however, teamwork and individual brilliance that easily won the match for Deng’s charges even as Makuel Duondak and Emmanuel Malou made 14 points each for the side.

Aron Zekeriah of Eritrea watched as his match-high 22 points went down the drain.

South Sudan dominated on all fronts and led from tip off to the last whistle. The first period ended 28-15.

Eritrea crumbled in the second quarter, allowing South Sudan to score 35 points against their eight.

The 40-point lead gave the eventual winners an edge as they slowed down in the third period which ended 21-20 in their favour.

In another match, Burundi picked their first win of the championship in their tournament opener, beating Somalia 106-86.

The 20-point loss for Somalia was an improvement from their first match where they lost 112-79 to South Sudan on day one.
