Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o says Kenya is still far from the vision the late Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga had for the country.

Speaking at Raila’s Opoda Farm on Saturday, October 25, 2025, Nyong’o shared his devastation at the death of the late leader, admitting that he was yet to come to terms with the death.

“It is not easy to accept that Jakom has left us. It will be very difficult for us, but we must find courage in his words, that there is a promised land, and Kenya will get there. We must carry that responsibility, knowing that where Kenya is today is not yet the promised land he envisioned,” he said.

Call to action

In honouring Raila’s legacy, the Orange Democratic Movement official challenged his fellow county bosses to take the lead in the transformative journey of taking the country to the levels the departed leader envisaged.

“Colleague governors, we must inherit that responsibility collectively. So et us work hard and ensure the least of the common man in this nation can share the gift of this nation, a dignified life where everyone can be proud of that is the promised land,” he added.

His remarks come after the council of Governors paid a courtesy call to the grieving family in Bondo.

The contingent was led by Governors James Orengo, Muthomi Njuki, Wilbur Otichillo, Simba Arati among others in another busy dat that the venue saw visitors stream in from different corners of Kenya.

Earlier on a contingent of Raila’s 2007 supporters army led by Thomas Kwaka and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi also paid a visit to the Odingas.

During the visit, Sudi recalled how he was in regular touch with Raila Odinga, even facilitating a call between him and William Ruto, despite their political differences, just before the 2022 election results.

Sudi stated that Raila was a man who was hugely misunderstood by many.

“We have come here as a team of Raila supporters during 2007, to offer our condolences. Many people misunderstood Raila, but those who strived to get close to him understood him and knew him very well. He was a man you would struggle to understand, very forgiving and reasonable,”

The delegaion consisted of over 30 prominent people who supported Raila Odinga’s bid during the 2007 elections
