Kenya Airways flight to New York turns back after mid-air technical fault
By Francis Muli, July 6, 2026A Kenya Airways flight bound for New York was forced to return to Nairobi on Sunday night, July 5, 2026, after developing a technical fault while flying over Chad.
In a customer update issued on Monday, July 6, 2026, the national carrier said Flight KQ002D, which had departed from Nairobi for New York, experienced a malfunction involving the aircraft’s flight control spoiler system at about 7:50 pm.
“Kenya Airways PLC (KQ) confirms that on 5 July 2026, at around 19:50Hrs, flight KQ002D from Nairobi to New York experienced a flight controls spoiler malfunction while flying over Chad,” the airline said.
The airline said the flight crew followed established safety procedures and opted to return the aircraft to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to allow engineers to conduct a comprehensive technical assessment.
“For the safety of our guests and crew onboard, the crew followed precautionary safety checks and elected to return to Nairobi for further technical evaluation by our teams,” Kenya Airways said, adding that the aircraft was expected to land safely at 12:30 am on Monday, July 6, 2026.
The airline apologized to passengers for the disruption, assuring them that the safety of passengers and crew remained its highest priority.
“We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience and assure them that their safety and that of our crew are our highest priority,” the statement said.
Kenya Airways said affected passengers would be rebooked on the next available flights to enable them to continue with their journeys as soon as possible.
The carrier also sought to reassure travellers that spoiler malfunctions are uncommon and that its flight crews are trained to safely manage such situations.
“Spoiler malfunctions are rare but can occur, and they cause increased drag and fuel consumption. Our pilots are trained to proficiently handle these scenarios safely, and air turnbacks are standard safety procedures,” the airline said.
Aircraft spoilers are movable panels mounted on the wings that help reduce lift and assist with braking and speed control during flight and landing. When a malfunction is detected, flight crews may elect to return to the departure airport as a precaution, depending on the nature of the fault and operational considerations.
Kenya Airways did not disclose the number of passengers and crew on board the flight.
