KeNHA warns motorists of traffic disruptions on Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory warning motorists to expect major disruptions along the busy Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway on Friday, November 28, 2025.

KeNHA says traffic flow on the 175-kilometre stretch will be heavily affected throughout the day as President William Ruto launches the upgraded dual carriage infrastructure at several points along the route.

In a public notice posted on X on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, KeNHA informed road users that the entire corridor is expected to experience significant congestion.

“The Rironi – Nakuru – Mau Summit (A8) Road will be launched by William Samoei Ruto at various locations,” the notice reads.

Due to the multiple events planned along the road, KeNHA warned that movement will slow down substantially and urged motorists to prepare for delays.

KeNHA advised travellers to consider postponing their journeys or using available alternative routes to avoid spending long hours stuck in traffic.

“The road is envisaged to experience significant traffic congestion for the whole day,” the notice reads.

KeNHA urged those heading to Nakuru or travelling between the Rift Valley and Nairobi to either reschedule their travel or use the alternative routes.

“Consequently, the Authority advises motorists intending to use this road to either reschedule their travel or use the following alternative routes,” the statement reads.

Diversions to use during closure

The agency listed several diversion options, including the Ngong – Suswa – Narok – Mau Narok – Njoro – Nakuru route, and the Nairobi – Thika – Magumu – Njabini – Ol Kalou – Nakuru route. Other recommended alternatives include the Nakuru – Kampi ya Moto – Ravine – Makutano stretch, and the Nakuru – Njoro – Molo – Mau Summit route.

KeNHA appealed for patience from motorists and asked them to plan their movements early to avoid frustration on the road.

“We urge all motorists plying these sections of the road to replan their journeys accordingly, and any inconvenience caused is regretted,” the statement reads

The upcoming dual carriage launch marks a significant milestone for one of Kenya’s busiest and most economically important highways.

However, with thousands of vehicles using the route daily, Friday’s event is expected to draw heavy traffic and heightened activity.

Motorists have been encouraged to stay alert and follow the guidance of traffic marshals and police officers who will be deployed along the corridor to manage the situation.
