KeNHA orders all billboards cleared from James Gichuru Road to JKIA
By Aloys Michael, January 14, 2026Roadside billboards, signs and temporary structures along the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) highway face the chop, and owners have just 14 days to remove them.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has served notice to everyone with roadside installations on the A8/B10 Highway from James Gichuru Road Junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The move, the authority says, will clear the way for major improvements aimed at easing traffic, boosting safety and giving the bustling corridor a fresh look.
“All roadside developments (billboards, direction and advertisement signs, tree nursery beds and temporary structures) within the said road reserve should be removed within 14 days from the date of this Notice to pave way for implementation of the project works,” KeNHA acting Director General Luka Kimeli said in a notice on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Kimeli warned that any structure left standing after the deadline will be taken down “without further reference to the owners or operators.”

He said the removal is critical for capacity upgrades, landscaping and beautification efforts along the highway that links central Nairobi to Kenya’s main international gateway.
Property owners and advertisers have been urged to act quickly to avoid having their structures removed at their own expense.
The directive follows President William Ruto’s announcement that reconstruction and beautification works are underway along Mombasa Road, from JKIA to ABC.
Addressing the nation on December 12, 2025, President Ruto explained the reason behind the project.

“Kwa sababu barabara ya Expressway imekamilika na wananchi wanatumia pale juu, barabara ya chini iko na matatizo na ndiyo sababu kuanzia hii Disemba mkienda krisimasi tutajenga upya na tuifanyie beautification ndiyo Nairobi ionekane kama city ya taifa letu,” he said.
(Now that the Expressway is complete and people are using the upper lanes, the lower road has experienced problems. That is why, starting this December, as we approach Christmas, we will reconstruct and beautify it so that Nairobi can truly reflect the status of our nation.)
KeNHA formally began the works on December 19, 2025, handing over the site to contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
“Arising from the presidential directive on the modernisation of infrastructure around the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), KeNHA has initiated a transformative infrastructure project aimed at strengthening Kenya’s gateway to the world,” the authority said.
