KDF recruitment 2025: General requirements, dates and application guidelines

The upcoming recruitment for KDF is set for October 2025. Interested candidates should note that all applications must be submitted online by October 12, 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be informed via print media between October 21 and 24, 2025.

KDF recruitment requirements: General conditions
All prospective applicants must meet specific KDF recruitment requirements before they can be considered. Firstly, candidates must be Kenyan citizens with a valid national ID card. They are required to bring their original documents along with four copies of their ID, KRA PIN certificate, and academic certificates for verification.
The age limits vary depending on the position:
- GSO Cadets (Regular and Graduates) and General Duty Recruits: 18–26 years.
- Specialist Officers and Tradesmen/women: not above 30 years.
- Chaplains/Imams: not above 39 years.
Candidates must have no criminal record and meet minimum physical requirements. Men must be at least 1.60m tall and weigh 54.55kg, while women must be at least 1.52m tall and weigh 50kg. Body Mass Index (BMI) should be below 30, and female candidates must not be pregnant during the recruitment process or training. Medical fitness as per KDF standards is mandatory.

Academic and professional qualifications
Different positions in the KDF specialist courses require specific academic qualifications:
- GSO Cadets (Regular): Minimum KCSE mean grade B (plain) with C+ in English, Mathematics, and one Science subject. Training lasts three years, leading to a BSc in Defence and Security Studies.
- GSO Cadets (Graduates): Must meet GSO Regular requirements and hold a Bachelor’s degree in fields such as Disaster Management, Security Studies, Engineering, Education, Finance, ICT, and more. Training lasts 15 months.
- Specialist Officers:Must hold the minimum requirement to qualify as GSO Cadet, be a Bachelor’s degree holder from a recognized University/Institution, and be registered with a regulatory/ statutory body where applicable in any of the disciplines specified.
- General Duty Recruits: Minimum KCSE grade D (plain). Candidates with NYS training have an added advantage.
- Tradesmen/Women: Diploma or certificate holders in relevant fields. Government Trade Test Grade II or Craft II is required for certificate holders.
- Defence Forces Constables: Retired KDF service members aged 30–55 or retired NYS personnel aged 35–45, with good conduct and honorable discharge.
Application procedure
Applications for GSO Cadets, Specialist Officers, and Tradesmen/women must be submitted through the KDF application portal. Candidates must complete their online registration and upload all required documents before the October 12, 2025, deadline.
After submission, shortlisted candidates will be notified through the print media between October 21 and 24, 2025.

KDF specialist courses and vacancies
The KDF specialist courses include a wide range of professional disciplines:
- Disaster Management/Security Studies: Criminology, Forensics, Peace and Conflict Studies, and related fields.
- Engineering: Civil, Mechanical, Aeronautical, Electrical, and other engineering fields.
- ICT: Software Engineering, Cyber Security, AI, and Robotics.
- Finance/Business Management: Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, and Procurement.
- Strategic Communication: Journalism, Mass Communication, Graphic Design, and Film Production.
- Medical and Legal: Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine, and Law.

General duty recruits and Defence Forces constables
Recruitment for General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables will take place at designated recruitment centres by teams from the Kenya Army, Air Force, and Navy. Candidates must meet general conditions and academic requirements as indicated above. This category includes new recruits as well as retired service members from KDF or NYS.
