A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier and a Sergeant of Police are among the latest victims of murder, with reports indicating there is an increase in violent crimes including murder, robbery with violence and sexual assaults. 

Among those killed include a one-month-old girl who was murdered in Isiolo while sexual assault victims include a mother who was raped by her own son in Bomet.  

On Saturday night in Murang’a, a police officer was arrested in connection to the Saturday murder of his colleague at Muranga Police Station.

The deceased, Sergeant Ali Sharano who was due to attend an Inspectorate promotion course at the Administration Police College Embakasi today was found dead on his bed inside his house on Saturday morning and investigations were launched. 

Detectives from the Murang’a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) contacted Dr John Ndereba from Murang’a Level V Referral Hospital who visited the scene and confirmed that the officer was already dead and the body was transferred to the mortuary.  

Later that day, a postmortem was conducted at Muranga Level V Hospital and it was established that the cause of death was physical strangulation.

“One suspect, a police officer who was transferred to Webuye and occasionally visits the deceased has been arrested in connection with the murder. He had spent the night in the same house on Friday night,” DCI said. 

The matter was reported by the suspect, Sergeant Pius Kasuni who was recently transferred from Muranga to Webuye police station.  

Elsewhere in Lanet, Nakuru County, detectives have launched investigations into the murder of a KDF soldier who was stabbed during a robbery incident as he was jogging on Saturday morning. 

Two assailants 

Sergeant Hezron Change attached to the Kenya Military Academy was jogging from his residence in Posta area when he was confronted by two assailants riding on a motorcycle, who stabbed him with a sharp object on his left shoulder and also inflicted a deep cut injury on his left eye. 

They also robbed him of his mobile phone, leaving him on the ground bleeding in the 5 am incident. He was rushed to Lanet Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.

Over 50 people have been killed and at least 20 others raped across the country in the last one week, according to official records. 

On Wednesday last week, a naked body of a woman was found inside a drum in Olkeri area within Ngong, Kajiado North Sub-County.

The body had visible injuries on both knees, and neck and the hands were tied with a rope.

A day earlier, a 30-year-old suspect, Julius Kipyego, was arrested by officers from Kobujoi police station for defiling a Grade Two pupil aged 7 in Kobujoi, Nandi South Sub-County. 

Unclear circumstances 

In Kambi ya Juu within Isiolo town, an 18-year-old man killed his one-month-old niece in unclear circumstances.

The deceased mother said she left the baby, Ifrah Mohammed, in her bedroom and later went and found the baby dead.

The brother attempted to escape, but she raised the alarm, and he was arrested. 

During the same period, a man was burnt beyond recognition in Borabu, Nyamache Sub-County on suspicion of having murdered his wife.

Body parts were found on Tuesday, covered with a sack by members of Bokimogori village, and later found to be 49-year-old Everline Nyaboke.

In the Chui location of Mathioya, Murang’a County, another 7-year-old boy and a Grade 2 pupil were defiled by another boy well known to him on Tuesday. 

A 55-year-old guard at Maraba SDA Church in Jua Kali Sub-location of Kakamega Central Sub-County was also murdered within the church compound on Tuesday last week.

The body of Pius Ngwete was found lying lifeless with deep cuts on the head.

On Monday last week, another 5-year-old girl and a PP1 pupil at Nguru school was also defiled by a person known to her as she was coming from school in Kiamuturi village of Mathioya Sub-County, Murang’a County. 

The victim’s grandmother said she was alarmed when the victim failed to reach home in time from school. She heard cries from a nearby bush and found out that it was from her granddaughter.

The person of interest escaped, and police have launched a manhunt. 

In Bondo, a man who left prison in April last year after serving eight years for killing his uncle has also been arrested for killing his brother in Sirembe Ndira village in Bondo, Siaya County.

George Odhiambo Odhiambo attacked his brother, Victor Katana Odhiambo, with a panga and rushed to Lwala Katiende police station where he reported that some people had assaulted the brother.

He requested the officers to accompany him to the hospital where they found other family members who identified him as the attacker. 

Odhiambo had also in 2018 murdered his uncle, Joannes Otieno Owuor and was jailed for 15 years by a Siaya Court in October 2019.

He filed an appeal challenging both conviction and sentence but later withdrew his appeal and urged the court to reduce his sentence.  

In Ngombe Moja area of Kapenguria in West Pokot, locals raided the residence of Paul Woyakapel on Tuesday and set it ablaze following reports that a Ugandan, only known as Masiko, who was residing there was the main suspect in the murder of a 7-year-old Brighton Kibet whose decomposing body was earlier found inside a maize plantation.

At least four of the killings have been attributed to love triangles and domestic violence. 

On Friday, a man killed his wife before dumping the body on the road in Agoro West Location of Nyakach Sub-County. Kelvin Omondi Ogacha was later arrested after their 8-year-old son told the police that the parents fought the previous night before the mother went missing. 

The body of Rose Atieno, 23, was found naked with a deep cut on her head and a swollen face. The previous day, another man was also stabbed to death in a suspected love triangle in Keroka, Nyamira County.

The woman Synder Kemunto and the attacker, Geoffrey Mukanda Okumu were arrested following the attack.
