The People’s Liberation Party (PL) leader, Martha Karua, has faulted the newly signed Bills into law by President William Ruto on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the State House.

On that particular day, the Head of State assented to eight bills that include key amendments to the National Land Commission Act, Land Act, Wildlife Conservation Act, Cybercrimes Act, and the National Police Service Commission Act.

Also signed were the Air Passenger Service Charge Bill, the Virtual Asset Service Providers Bill, and the Privatisation Bill. After Ruto signed them, the bills officially formed part of the Statutes of the Republic of Kenya.

According to a statement by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) shortly after the ceremony, the ruling party said the passage of these laws reflects the government’s commitment to fairness, modernisation, and inclusive progress.

“These transformative laws are designed to address historical injustices, enhance transparency and accountability, and accelerate digital and economic reforms, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a just, modern, and prosperous Kenya in line with the national transformation agenda,” the statement read in part.

However, Martha Karua has said the new laws undermine public welfare and democracy, promising to fight back and defend the country’s freedoms.

Karua speaks

”The controversial bills signed in haste under the cover of national grief represent the very opposite of the democracy and transparency generations of Kenyans fought for. These bills: Silence dissent. Weaken civic voice. Disregard public welfare. True democracy listens to the people; it doesn’t suppress them. We cannot stand by as our hard-won freedoms are eroded. The fight for accountability continues. Now more than ever,” Karua took to X on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

This comes after President Ruto also signed the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering of Terrorism Financing Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as well as the Insurance Professionals Bill 2024, into law on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the State House, Nairobi.

Martha Karua has also hit back at the President for taking advantage of the grieving period occasioned by the demise of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on the day the President signed the eight bills into law.
