Detectives have finalised investigations into the shooting to death of a businessman in Juja and recommended that fugitive Police Corporal Caroline Kangogo be charged with murder upon arrest.

As the search for Kangogo continues, another team of detectives has been investigating the two shootings in Nakuru and Juja, Kiambu county.

The probe that involved CCTV footage and call data analysis as well as witness interviews, among other issues, has placed Kangogo at the scene of the murder of businessman Peter Ndwiga.

Juja Directorate of Criminal Investigations Richard Mwaura said his team had concluded investigations into Ndwiga’s murder and was ready to present Kangogo before court when she is arrested.

“Our file is ready, and anytime she is arrested or she surrenders, we shall parade her before the court,” Mwaura told People Daily yesterday.

Mwaura disclosed that forensic and ballistic examinations has been conducted on spent cartridge found in the lodging which Kangogo and Ndwiga had booked to determine whether it was the same gun used in the killing of a policeman in Nakuru county.

Meanwhile, dozens of undercover detectives have descended on several trading centres in Elgeyo Marakwet county as the search for Kangogo intensifies.

A similar operation is going on around Nakuru town and its environs with detectives combing several entertainment spots the policewoman was known to frequent.

Heightened security

A spot-check at Kasarani Police Lines, where Kangogo lives with her two children before she went underground last week revealed heightened security in the area.  Sources said Kangogo’s two children have been placed under safe custody.

County Criminal Investigating Officer Anthony Sunguti said security officers in Nakuru were on high alert to trace and arrest the wanted policewoman.

Kangogo’s house has also been secured as it is regarded as an “active scene of crime,” according to Sunguti.

“We have sealed her house because we consider it an active crime scene,” he said.

Locals who spoke to People Daily in Kangogo’s Nyawa village home in Elgeyo Marakwet reported seeing “smartly dressed strangers” making rounds at local shopping centres and entertainment spots.

At Chepkorio trading centre in Keiyo South constituency, residents said they had spotted strangers in suits driving around since Friday last week.

“The people in dark glasses stopped near Kapserere shopping centre talking in hushed tones. They did not talk to us. They had some communication gadgets,” said James Rop, a resident.

“We’ve have even spotted some of them taking tea and meals in local hotels and restaurants. However, they don’t talk to locals,” said a resident who only identified himself as Arap Boiwo.

Kangogo’s father, Barnaba Kipkoech Korir, a former police officer, said that no detective had visited the home in search of his daughter.

“We have not seen any police officer here. She has also not called us since the incident happened. We are still appealing to her to end this anxiety and surrender. She is a police officer and she knows the law,” said the elderly man.

People Daily has also established that detectives had intensified patrols on major highways including the busy Eldoret-Nakuru-Nairobi highway, conducting random searches on vehicles.

A senior police officer in the region said all police stations were under strict instructions to offer the necessary support to the detectives.

A combined team of detectives from DCI and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) has been tasked with coordinating the search for the wanted policewoman.

Nakuru East sub-county deputy police commander Phanton Analo revealed that Kangogo had been listed as being “absent without leave”, adding that upon the lapse of 11 days since she went missing, she will be deemed to have deserted duty.

“We have our guidelines in the Service and at the moment she is absent without leave; she will be considered a deserter when the stipulated time elapses. At that point, we shall issue a warrant for arrest,” said Analo. It emerged last week that Kangogo withdrew Sh40,000 from a bank in Juja last Monday.
