Kang’ata laments after former MP is arrested in connection with theft of lorries

By , February 9, 2026

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has expressed concern after a former Member of Parliament (MP) was arrested in connection with the theft of two lorries, including a garbage collection truck belonging to the Murang’a County Government.

In a brief statement shared via his official X account on the night of Sunday, February 8, 2026, Kang’ata revealed that one of the recovered vehicles is a county-owned garbage collection truck, raising serious questions about the involvement of politically connected individuals in the theft of public assets.

“One of these lorries belongs to the Muranga County Government. Garbage collection truck. One suspect is a former Member of Parliament,” Kang’ata stated.

The governor thanked the police for their swift action in recovering the stolen vehicles, noting that the intervention had helped safeguard public property and prevent further loss.

“Thanks, Police, for helping us recover,” he stated.

DCI recovers stolen lorries

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had on Sunday, February 9, 2026, revealed that its detectives drawn from the Operation Support Unit (OSU) had recovered two Isuzu lorries that were stolen in Murang’a County.

The vehicles in question, the DCI stated, were an Isuzu FVZ with registration number KDQ 845T and an Isuzu FRR with registration number KDL 078W, which had been stolen in Gatanga on August 16, 2025.

Former MP arrested

Five persons of interest were arrested, among them being former Mwea MP Peter Njuguna Gitau, who served for two terms under the Party of National Unity (PNU) from 2007 to 2013, and the National Alliance (TNA) from 2013 to 2017.

Detectives from the Operation Support Unit (OSU) have recovered two Isuzu lorries that were stolen in Murang’a County.

The vehicles in question, an Isuzu FVZ with registration number KDQ 845T and an Isuzu FRR with registration number KDL 078W, were taken in a brazen theft in Gatanga on August 16, 2025.

“Following the theft, a meticulous investigation was set in motion, and through intelligence leads, five suspects: Peter Njuguna Gitau, Mark Kinyua, Erick Chege, David Kigo, and Joseph Ndung’u Waweru, the masterminds behind this daring heist, were arrested,” the DCI stated.

“Upon interrogation, the suspects led detectives to Mombasa County, where the lorries were recovered in Makupa, as follows: the Isuzu FVZ (KDQ 845T) had been fitted with a counterfeit registration plate, KDV 449C, while the Isuzu FRR (KDL 078W) was fitted with a fake plate, KCA 505D, in a desperate attempt to evade the long arm of the law.”
