London Marathon: Kenya’s Kamworor-led squad set for stiff competition from Ethiopian men

Kenyan athletes are set to face stiff competition from Ethiopian rivals in the London Marathon set for Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The Ethiopian unit consists of New York City Marathon champion Tamirat Tola, who is the seventh-fastest man in history, and Mosinet Geremew (2:02:55).

Multiple world champion on the track – and the third-fastest marathoner in history, Kenenisa Bekele, who set a new world record in the masters category at the 2023 Valencia Marathon when he ran 2:04:19, aged 41 will also carry Ethiopia’s flag.

The Kenyan unit will be led by Alexander Mutiso Munyao, who was runner-up at the 2023 Valencia Marathon in a time of 2:03:11, and 2023 London Marathon runner-up Geoffrey Kamworor.

Emile Cairess of Britain returns after becoming the third-fastest Brit in history when he ran 2:08:07 on his London Marathon debut last year. Callum Hawkins, who has twice finished fourth at the World Championships and will be making his first appearance at the London Marathon since setting his PB of 2:08:14 at the 2019 event, will join Cairess.

Marc Scott,  who is the 2022 World Indoor Championships bronze medallist over 3000m, will make his debut, while Mahamed Mahamed will run for the first time at the London Marathon after his debut at the Valencia Marathon last year, where he ran 2:08:40.
