‘Any child of mine who won’t go to streets faces DNA test’ – MP Kaluma says ahead of Tuesday demos
Homa Bay Town Constituency Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has hinted at having his children to join Tuesday’s anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations.
According to the “Seven Days of rage” plan, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, will see the youth once again occupy the streets as demonstrations continue with the National Assembly set to have the second reading of the Bill.
Kaluma declaration
Kaluma, who entered parliament on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket and is in his second term, says his children must join the protests just like other children.
The MP declared that any of his children who won’t join the protest on Tuesday to demonstrate against over-taxation and corruption will have to undergo a DNA test.
“Any child of mine who will not go to the streets with other children of Kenya this Tuesday to protest over-taxation and corruption in government will face a DNA test! The children of Kenya MUST walk together to succeed where we failed,” Kaluma posted on his X account.
Last Tuesday and Thursday saw scores of youth camping on the streets as the Finance Bill debate started.
On Thursday, the demonstrations began at 9:00 a.m. and continued throughout the final debate and voting session.
The Members of Parliament went on and voted to have the Finance Bill 2024 proceed to the next stage of the Second Reading.
A total of 204 MPs voted to pass the Bill to the next stage, while 115 voted to reject it. The Bill will now proceed to the Committee of the whole House, where MPs will review each clause and vote on any proposed amendments by the Finance and Budgetary Committee or other members.
Voting on amendments
After the committee stage, members will vote to either agree or reject the amendments adopted or dropped.
During the third reading, the chairperson for the Finance and Budget Committee, Kimani Kuria, will move that the Bill be read a third time. If approved, the Bill will be considered passed and will await Presidential assent.
