Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has claimed the country’s opposition is united in hypocrisy and dishonesty.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the vocal MP noted that the team is unpatriotic, referring to the halted 2017-2025 protest victims compensation plan initiated by President William Ruto. Kaluma has accused the opposition of demonstrating with parents whose children lost their lives in the unrest while halting the process of compensation.

Hypocrisy and dishonesty

”Kenya’s opposition is united in hypocrisy and dishonesty – very unprincipled, unpatriotic and rudderless characters! They demonstrate with mothers whose children died during demonstrations, then go to court to stop the compensation scheme established by President Ruto,” Kaluma said.

Peter Kaluma’s sentiments on the protest victims’ compensation come at a time when the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests had filed an urgent application in the High Court at Kerugoya seeking to vacate conservatory orders that suspended its work.

The panel’s 18 interested parties filed a Notice of Motion and Certificate of Urgency seeking to vacate the orders, warning that unless the matter is heard quickly, the panel’s lifespan will expire before its work is completed.

The orders, issued ex parte on September 8 by Justice Magare Dennis Kizito Ngwono, froze the panel’s activities, sparking fears that its 120-day mandate could lapse before victims receive compensation.

The panel, launched on September 4, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), was established to identify, verify, and compensate victims of protest-related violence dating back to 2017.

Makau Mutua laments

Following the ongoing legal process, the panel’s chairman, President William Ruto’s senior advisor on constitutional affairs and human rights, Professor Makau Mutua, also accused Kenya’s political class of blocking justice for victims of protests.

In a post shared on X on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Mutua questioned why wealthy politicians and lawyers were fighting so hard to stop compensation, terming their move as hypocritical.

“WHY would rich, wealthy, and powerful politicians and greedy lawyers fight so hard to deny victims of protests and riots compensation from the state? The cynicism, callousness, and hypocrisy of Kenya’s elites is truly galling. Shame on them!” he posted.

Meanwhile, some of the key members of the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests have also bowed to public pressure and resigned from the team, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo.
