Kalonzo steps up attack on Ruto over repression and human rights violations

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, on Friday, August 15, 2025, revisited his onslaught against William Ruto’s regime over its complicity in cases of state repression and violations of human rights.

Speaking at the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) conference in Kwale on Friday, August 15, 2025, Kalonzo cited the regime over the torturing of young Kenyans and attempts to criminalise inalienable rights of individuals.

“2024/25 is a case study of state repression and unlike anything experienced in our country in 62 years of independence. As the opposition, we have to say it as it is. The open daylight abductions, public beatings, and maiming of young Kenyans innocently protesting the growth of a militia group that terrorised Kenyans. This is the current state of the nation, where repression and tyranny threaten to pervade and infect the country,” he stated.

Human rights abuses

He noted that Kenya Kwanza had attempted to crack down on human rights in spite of the nation being a signatory to several treaties on human rights.

The former VP noted that such flagrant abuse of the fundamental rights informed the opposition’s decision to form the People’s Restorative Justice Commission.

The opposition launched the commission at Ufungamano House on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, to address issues arising from incidents of state brutality, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.

“This regime’s inability to protect human rights values established the people’s restorative justice. A people-led initiative focused on restoring dignity and rebuilding life and holding perpetrators of crimes against humanity to account,” he stated

The lawyer parted his speech by challenging the legal fraternity to remain alert to cases of human rights violations and act to safeguard the constitution of the nation.

“Time is of the essence. We have to come to the rescue of this nation from a regime hellbent on suspending our hard-fought constitution. The law is not just an instrument of order; it is a covenant of justice. If we are not vigilant, our constitution shall be eroded and our country will be undermined,” he stated.

The Wiper leader also lauded the role of the LSK president in fighting for the victims of state repression and abduction victims during the turbulent times that the nation grappled with cases of forced disappearances and abductions.

“If the LSK drops the ball, we have no country. Therefore, Faith continues to keep faith and hope and fight,” he stated. “You held fast and became the beacon of hope for the country.”
