Azimio party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the police force of violating the Constitution and actively undermining the rule of law, saying the conduct of security agencies reflects a dangerous shift away from what Kenyans expected after the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.

Speaking during a media engagement at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC, Kalonzo said the police had moved from being a service Kenyans trusted to one that was now harming citizens and violating fundamental rights.

“Imagine from being the kind of police force Kenyans wanted to now a police force which is killing citizens, which is even tear-gassing children in churches, as happened a week ago in the church in Othaya. I mean completely the opposite of what Kenyans expected,” Kalonzo stated.

The Wiper leader condemned the desecration of places of worship, accusing the current administration of contradicting its own rhetoric.

“Places of worship are sacred places, and we are dealing with an administration which believes they were prayed into office and they have said it, but they are prayed into office, and they are now adulterating or making nonsense of worship, which again is a constitutional right,” he said.

Police regression

According to the Azimio leader, the police force has deteriorated rather than improved following constitutional reforms that were supposed to transform law enforcement.

“So look at that shift by the police who are supposed to reform. Now they are even worse, which is why we must run for president and get the country back again to constitutionalism, a country that is run in accordance with the Constitution of 2010, a country that will be under the rule of law,” Kalonzo stated.

He linked the misconduct by security agencies to his decision to seek the presidency, saying the country needed leadership committed to restoring constitutional governance.

Escorting goons

The former vice president further accused the police of escorting criminal gangs to disrupt political activities, warning that such actions posed a serious threat to democracy and public safety.

“They are now escorting goons to disrupt political rallies, even to attempt assassination because what happened in Nyerere, I think we are still dealing with that issue,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo announced plans to return to the scene of the church tear-gassing incident on February 16, 2026, to demand accountability from the Inspector General of Police.

“We said by the way we are going back on the 16th of this month to find out from the inspector general whether we will have arrested these goons and not only goons, the officers who were supposed to, because the goons themselves do not have tear gas capacity and the trauma they caused in that community of worshippers,” he stated.

The Wiper leader further used the litany of police abuses to reinforce his determination to seek the presidency and restore what he described as the change that has always escaped Kenya.

“So we’re going back there and so reasons, reason after reason why we have to run and get our country back and give it the kind of change that has always escaped,” Kalonzo said.
