Kalonzo: Ruto wants to divide United Opposition
By Emmanuel Rono, July 5, 2026Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto of attempting to split the emerging united opposition coalition, claiming the Head of State views a divided opposition as his only path to securing a second term in office.
Speaking during a church service on Sunday, July 5, 2026, Kalonzo claimed that President William Ruto’s political strategy is to sow divisions among opposition leaders, arguing that a united opposition would significantly weaken the president’s re-election prospects.

“Because we know the only card President William Ruto wants to play is to divide this team. Because he knows that without this team being divided, he is one term,” Kalonzo said.
Extensive consultation
Kalonzo said coalition building involves extensive consultations and appealed to supporters not to misinterpret the pace of the talks.
He urged Kenyans to exercise patience as opposition leaders continue negotiations to form a united coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting the process cannot be rushed.
“When we do these things the way we will choose to do them, please give us the time. Do not make it look like we are,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader expressed confidence that the opposition has sufficient political strength to defeat the president if it remains united.

Kalonzo, however, maintained that the opposition’s criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration should not be interpreted as disrespect for those in authority.
“It doesn’t need scientific mathematics to know when you add all these numbers, there is absolutely no way he is not going to be one term,” he said.
“It is not that we are disrespectful to those in authority, but the time has come in our country’s history to call a spade a spade,” he said.
Opposition Coalition talks
His remarks come amid ongoing consultations involving key opposition figures seeking to forge a broad-based coalition and agree on a common strategy ahead of the 2027 polls.
This comes a day after Gachagua revealed that the United Opposition will not be rushed into naming its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County during a meeting with Githunguri constituency leaders on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Gachagua said the opposition remains committed to presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
“We can name our candidate as late as the 15th of May. That is the deadline for ya kupeana a presidential candidate. Ata tukiwa named on the 13th of May, iko makosa?” Gachagua posed.
