Kalonzo Musyoka: Selling Safaricom is selling Kenya’s soul
Former Vice President and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly opposed the proposed sale of shares in Safaricom PLC, declaring that Kenya’s leading telecommunications company is a national asset that must be protected from disposal.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Kalonzo has revealed that he appeared as lead counsel in the Court of Appeal Civil Application No. E261 of 2026, a case challenging the proposed disposition of Safaricom PLC shares.
“Earlier today, I appeared as lead counsel in the Court of Appeal Civil Application No. E261 of 2026, the matter concerning the proposed disposition of Safaricom PLC shares,” Kalonzo said.

According to Kalonzo, the matter stems from conservatory orders previously issued by the High Court and has now been escalated to the Court of Appeal for determination. The case was adjourned to noon after proceedings earlier in the day.
The Wiper leader argued that Safaricom is more than just a corporate entity, describing it as a national institution that was conceived in Kenya, built by Kenyans, and relied upon daily by millions of citizens.
“Safaricom PLC is not merely a corporation. It is a national institution, conceived in Kenya, built by Kenyans, and sustained by the tens of millions who depend on it every single day,” Kalonzo said.
He warned that any attempt to dispose of the telecommunications giant would amount to compromising Kenya’s national interests.
“To sell it is to sell Kenya’s soul and body,” he stated.
Kalonzo vows to fight on
Kalonzo further pledged to fight the proposed transaction through the courts, saying his legal team would present its arguments based on constitutional principles, the rule of law, and the sovereign interests of the Kenyan people.
“We will present our case with the full force of the Constitution, the rule of law, and the sovereign interests of the Kenyan people behind us,” he said.

The case is expected to attract significant public interest given Safaricom’s strategic role in Kenya’s economy, telecommunications sector, and digital financial services ecosystem. The outcome of the appeal could have far-reaching implications for the future ownership and control of one of East Africa’s most influential companies.
Kalonzo maintained that justice must prevail and that Kenya’s national interests should remain protected as the court deliberates on the matter.
