Kalonzo invokes Raila Odinga’s legacy in Human Rights Day message

Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has used this year’s Human Rights Day to honour the late Raila Odinga, describing him as a statesman whose life’s work embodied the global values being celebrated.

In a message shared on X on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Kalonzo said the occasion could not pass without reflecting on Raila’s lifelong devotion to justice, dignity and the protection of the vulnerable.

In his statement, Kalonzo rooted his message in both the universal ideals of the day and Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.

“Today, we pause to reflect not only on the universal rights that bind humanity: dignity, freedom, justice, but also on the life of a man who devoted his life: the late Second Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga,” he said.

Kalonzo noted that Human Rights Day, marked globally every 10 December, offered the country a moment to recommit to principles Raila fought for over decades, often at great personal cost.

He urged Kenyans to allow Raila’s legacy to guide the country toward deeper respect for the rule of law and protection of the vulnerable.

“As we commemorate this day, let us honour Raila’s legacy by recommitting ourselves to the ideals he lived for: equality before the law, respect for human dignity, and standing up for the vulnerable,” Kalonzo wrote.

He added that ordinary citizens have a responsibility to keep demanding fairness, accountability and justice, even when leadership fails to meet those standards.

“Let his life inspire every Kenyan to demand accountability, justice, and human dignity for all,” he said.

The message comes at a moment when the country continues to reflect on Raila’s decades-long role in the struggle for multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms, and the protection of civic freedoms. Kalonzo, who worked closely with Raila in multiple political formations, framed the late leader’s legacy as inseparable from the broader fight for human rights in Kenya.

By tying Human Rights Day to Raila’s memory, Kalonzo positioned the late opposition chief not just as a political figure, but as a symbol of resilience in the pursuit of justice.
