Kalonzo hails Raila’s legacy on the continent, urges support for youth movements
By Faith Lagat, November 9, 2025Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for robust support for a youth-led Pan-African movement, framing recent Gen-Z protests across Africa as a continuation of the continent’s liberation struggles.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Pan-African Institute at Lukenya University on November 9, 2025, the event brought together distinguished guests, including former Botswana President Seretse Khama Ian Khama, former Liberian Vice President Jewel Cianeh Taylor, and Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior.

Honouring visionaries and Raila Odinga’s legacy
Reflecting on the institution’s growth, Kalonzo said, “This university holds a special place in my heart. Every visit reminds me of its remarkable journey, from the laying of the first stone to this very moment, as we break ground for the Pan-African Institute. It is a story of vision, courage, and unwavering perseverance.”
He praised the founders, noting, “The dream of Justice (Rtd.) Kasanga Mulwa and Martha Mulwa have not only endured — they have flourished. Lukenya University stands today as a shining example of how vision, determination, and purpose can create transformative institutions.”
Paying tribute to the late Raila Odinga, Kalonzo added, “Raila’s Pan-Africanism was never merely ideological; it was a way of life. For decades, he championed African unity, economic cooperation, and leadership that prioritises people. He believed passionately that Africa must speak with one voice, and that our continent’s future depends on our ability to stand together.”
He also highlighted the late Raila Odinga’s enduring vision for a connected and united Africa.
“Africa cannot trade or integrate without infrastructure. For Raila, this connection was more than development; it was liberation — a living symbol of Pan-African unity. Even in death, Raila’s spirit continues to inspire. His voice reminds us that Africa’s power lies in cooperation, not division; in dignity, not dependency.”
Youth-led Pan-Africanism and the institute’s role
Kalonzo described the ongoing Gen-Z-led protests across Africa as a fresh wave of Pan-Africanism, signalling a generational shift in the continent’s political landscape.

“There is a wind of change sweeping across our continent. This wind is the latest expression of Pan-Africanism. The wave of Gen-Z-led protests across Africa — against bad governance, corruption, impunity, lack of transparency, electoral fraud, and rising living costs — is a powerful testament to a new generation rising. These peaceful demonstrations are not acts of recklessness; they are acts of hope and determination.”
Kalonzo Musyoka described the surge of youth-led Pan-Africanism as a deliberate and powerful movement across the continent.
“This surge of youth-led Pan-Africanism is not accidental. Nineteen coups in just four years, coupled with the persistence of #WANTAM presidencies, are warnings we cannot ignore. The people of Africa are awake, and the spirit of Pan-Africanism is alive, resilient, and unstoppable.”
On the role of the Pan-African Institute, Kalonzo emphasised its potential as a transformative hub for the continent.
“Let this Institute be a beacon — a place where ideas ignite, talents are nurtured, and Pan-African ideals are brought to life through education, innovation, and action. Together, let us continue the work of building a continent where opportunity, dignity, and prosperity are within reach for all. The journey is long, but the vision is clear: an Africa united, strong, and free. Viva Africa! God bless you. God bless the Republic of Kenya. God bless Africa!”
