Kalonzo calls for Haiti funding probe

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the government to withdraw National Police Officers from Haiti following underfunding.
He also pushed for auditing of the funds used in the mission.
Speaking at Naserian village, Kajiado East, during the burial of Samuel Tompoi Kaitwai who was killed by gangs in Haiti, Kalonzo maintained that the risks in the mission were big.
He said grey areas of funding should be addressed to ensure transparency.
He said if funding of the Haiti Mission is not clearly defined, taxpayers will have to bear the unsustainable burden of up to Sh4.5 billion to fund the mission.
Kalonzo said the United Nations Security Council should take a special mandate in the mission to avert deadly outcome.
“Kenyans deserve to know how the funds that were given by the US were utilised. There must be accountability. The Haiti mission funding must be clear to avert exposing our young men to gangsters,” said Kalonzo.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments, saying the risks in the mission cannot be swept under the carpet and that Kenya should withdraw or define the period of the mission.
Wamalwa said the mission was done in a hurry leaving grey areas in strategy and policies that ensure sustainability and safety of the police officers.
“If America withdrew from the Haiti mission our solders will be exposed unless the UN takes over,” said Wamalwa.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli said the National Police Service is keen on addressing challenges arising from the mission and restoring normalcy in the Caribbean nation.
“Serving at the NPS is a calling. Today we mourn a fallen hero who made the right choice to serve his nation. Having comprehensive medical cover for the soldiers and their families is among key issues NPS has taken into account. NPS will ensure timely processing of all dues of our fallen soldier,” said Masengeli.
Kajiado leaders steered off politics.
“We are here to mourn with the Salaash family. The son of the soil died a hero and to honour him we will not use this platform to politick,” said Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku
