Kalonzo blames Ruto govt for Kenya Railways retirees’ land grabbing

By , March 14, 2025

Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has blamed President William Ruto’s government for the incident involving the grabbing of land belonging to the Kenya Railways retirees.

The self-declared people’s loyal opposition leader on Friday, March 14, 2025, met the Association of Kenya Railways Retirees (AKERARE), alongside the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) party leader Martha Karua, in Nairobi, a day after the association’s members were blocked by the police from accessing their land along Valley Road.

According to Kalonzo, the police cited orders from above as the reason for blocking the retirees from accessing their property.

Kalonzo condemns incident

Kalonzo, while condemning the incident, shifted the blame to the Ruto government, arguing that it has people who have no empathy, with blatant greed and wanton theft backed by state instruments of power, who are holding sway over the people of Kenya.

“Earlier today, I met with the Association of Kenya Railways Retirees (AKERARE) together with Martha Karua, Senators Dan Maanzo and Agnes Muthama, and Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe at the Sarova Panafric Hotel, Nairobi. The Association members had yesterday held a march to their property, Land Reference Number 209/1064/1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 Valley Road—less than a kilometer from where we are now. They were met with resistance from a police force that said they had “orders from above.” Fellow Kenyans, this is another clear example of the kind of people who are leading our country. They have no empathy, and blatant greed and wanton theft backed by state instruments of power are holding sway over the people of Kenya,” Kalonzo stated.

Kalonzo on Ruto’s regime

The former vice president went ahead to claim that Ruto’s regime has shown no concern about the aging retirees, whom he says were sent home by the Kenya Railways Corporation without their pension.

Further, Kalonzo accused an unnamed high-profile person in the Kenya Kwanza government of the grabbing of the land, which he says is now under the protection of the police.

“The Ruto regime isn’t concerned about the aging retirees who were sent home by the Kenya Railways Corporation without their pension. Kenya Railways, pursuant to a Cabinet Memo, vested this property in their Retirement Scheme. However, a person high up in this Kenya Kwanza government has grabbed the property. They have chased the poor pensioners out of their property on Valley Road, which is now under police protection as the “private developer” proceeds to demolish houses of the poor retirees,” Kalonzo wrote on X.

Additionally, Kalonzo demanded that the property and many others that have been grabbed and illegally occupied be handed back to their rightful owners.
