An Officer Commanding a Police Station in Kakamega county is fighting for his life in hospital after being attacked by an assailant.

Chief Inspector Kennedy Odongo of Navakholo Police Station was attacked by the suspect who was armed with crude weapons after he led a team of police officers in an operation to disarm and arrest him following a distress call from a family member.

“It was reported by one Walter Wanjala, a resident of Mukwa Village of Chekata area within Sivilie Location about nine kilometres North East of the Station, that his younger brother namely Ian Wanjala, aged 22, who is notorious for using drugs had armed himself with a panga, a knife and a jembe and that he was threatening to kill their mother, one Florence Nasenya, aged 68,” said a police report.

“The OCS Navakholo Police Station led a team of officers to the scene of distress call, whereby the suspect was found armed and pursuing his mother,” it added.

Police officers are said to have intervened to calm the suspect but instead he turned against the OCS aiming to cut him on the head with the jembe.

Kakamega County Police Commander Joseph Kigen said the OCS evaded the aim, blocking with his right hand thereby sustaining two broken fingers and fell on the ground while attempting to escape.

“The suspect cornered him and again aimed with the jembe but before striking, the OCS fired a warning round in the air. The suspect persisted aiming to cut the OCS, who was still down, and in the process the officer shot him on the chest,” he added.

Kigen stated that both the assailant and the OCS were rushed to the Navakholo Sub-County Hospital where the suspect was declared dead on arrival.

He said the OCS was given first aid treatment and referred to Kakamega County General Referral Hospital.
