Kabunde Airstrip upgrade raises tourism and trade hopes in South Nyanza
By Viola Kosome, June 15, 2026The quest to open South Nyanza to tourism and trade is gathering momentum as the expansion of Kabunde airstrip in Homa Bay takes shape.
The move is part of an effort to expand connectivity to a region where air transport is still struggling to pick up despite its close proximity to Tanzania and rich tourism sites such as the Ruma National Park.
The construction of the passenger terminal is at an advanced stage and is part of an effort to shape the facility as a regional aviation hub.
Residents are upbeat about the project that is being implemented by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) that it will improve their travel to regional destinations and unlock the region’s tourism potential.
According to KAA, the airstrip is being expanded into a Class C airport capable of handling increased passenger traffic and supporting economic growth in the region.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said construction of the terminal building was advancing well, with reinforced concrete columns already in place and foundation works ongoing.
“The development of Kabunde Airstrip is a major milestone in deepening the gains of devolution and improving accessibility to Homa Bay County. Enhanced air connectivity will support tourism, trade and investment across the region,” he said.
The new terminal will feature modern passenger facilities including check-in counters, security screening areas, baggage handling sections and administrative offices.

Runway works near completion
Additional infrastructure works include the construction of aircraft parking aprons, taxiways, drainage systems, perimeter fencing, access roads and parking areas.
The PS noted that the runway expansion project had been completed in April this year, extending the runway from 1.1 kilometres to 1.3 kilometres. The upgrade now allows larger aircraft, including the Dash 8-100, to operate at full capacity.
With the runway, taxiways and airfield markings complete, flight operations have resumed, including scheduled services linking Homa Bay with Nairobi through Wilson Airport.
Omollo said security measures around the airstrip had also been strengthened to protect passengers and critical infrastructure.
“The State Department is coordinating security arrangements around the facility through personnel deployment and enhanced surveillance systems. These measures will ensure the safety of passengers and support the smooth operation of this important regional gateway,” he said.
Collins Onyango, a trader, said the improved airport would open up the county to investors and tourists.
“Many investors have been discouraged by the long road journeys. With a modern airport and regular flights, Homa Bay will become more attractive for business. Hotels, transport operators and local traders will all benefit,” he said.
Omollo said the government’s broader goal was to ensure that infrastructure development translates into economic growth and improved livelihoods for residents.
“These investments are not just about buildings and transport facilities. They are about creating opportunities, supporting businesses, attracting investment and improving the quality of life for our people.” he said.
