Chwele-Kabuchai MCA Erick Wekesa reveals living as fugitive amid fear for his life

Erick Wekesa, the recently elected Kabuchai-Chwele Member of County Assembly, has opened up on facing threats to his life since being elected as an MCA.

Speaking during an IEBC engagement forum on Monday, December 8, 2025, the MCA, who defied a Ford Kenya wave to clinch the seat as an independent candidate, detailed how his election victory seemed to have come at a cost too huge to bear.

Intimidation

Wekesa claims he became a target of political violence and intimidation, which has compelled him and his family to move away from their house.

He further revealed that up to 17 people of his campaign team are still nursing injuries in the hospital.

“I have never slept in my house since I was elected. My family cannot even access my house. My wife is not at home, and my elderly mother is living in the bushes. I am an MCA who cannot freely discharge his mandate,” he stated.

Political harassment

According to him, the ongoing threats to his life have made him switch from using his internet-enabled phone, as he fears being tracked down.

The MCA has blamed his untold predicaments on unnamed influential politicians in the region, claiming that they have been orchestrating the acts of terror against him

“On 31st October, I was beaten before an OCPD by a known person, and no action has been taken against him since,” he stated.

He is, however, hopeful that state agencies will act and ensure that such a culture of impunity comes to an end and allows people the right to exercise their democratic rights.

Political Impunity

“We need to stop this entitlement in politics and to power, that if it is not my person, then it will not be. This is what is bedevilling our politics in Bungoma. Some people believe they should not have lost that seat. I want to urge politicians to stop this entitlement,” he added.

Wekesa, who enjoyed the endorsement of the united opposition politicians, trounced Vincent Maunda of Ford Kenya to clinch the ward seat in the polls conducted on November 27, 2025.

His closest rival, Maunda of the Ford Kenya party, garnered 2,765 votes.

Other candidates who were in the race include Samuel Barasa (69 votes), Phanice Kutwa (52 votes), Kizito Matumbai (75 votes), Elizabeth Situma (17 votes), Dan Simiyu (29 votes), Margaret Nabwala (4 votes), and Evans Barasa (41 votes).
