Kabando lauds new generation lawyers for defending Gen Z protesters
By Mustafa Juma, August 12, 2025Former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando has lauded a group of new-generation human rights lawyers for their relentless efforts in defending Gen Z protesters and other youth arrested during recent demonstrations.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, Kabando singled out Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Njeri Maina, Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino, and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, commending them for always showing up in courts to defend young Kenyans pro bono.
He went ahead to pray that God blesses and protects them.
“Asanteni Sana new generation of human rights lawyers, Wazalendo @Hon_Njeri_Maina @HEBabuOwino @NjiruAdv et al, for your tireless and essential sacrifices in court defence for Genzs/maandamano youths being maliciously arraigned. Mola Jalali Maulana awabariki awalinde,” Kabando stated.

The three lawyers have always shown up in courts to seek the release of youthful Kenyans who have in the recent past been arrested over protests or for criticising the government.
Babu Owino on studying law
Babu Owino, for instance, has previously opened up on why he chose to pursue law.
In a candid conversation with Oga Obinna on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, the lawmaker explained that the reason he had studied law was to stand with the less privileged, adding that being admitted to the bar had always been his goal.

Owino further disclosed that when he was growing up, police officers used to harass people in their homes, arrest them in the house, beat them, and intimidate them. As a result, he explained, he felt compelled to pursue a field of study that would empower him to assist those facing similar injustices.
He added that he found that discipline in law, and that is why he chose to study law.
“Being admitted to the bar is what I have always wanted. The reason why I studied law is for the downtrodden; it is for the less privileged in the community, it is for those who do not have, and it is for the people who are down,” he disclosed.
“Because when I was being raised up police officers used to harass people in our house, arrest people in the house, and beat people in the house, and therefore I also needed a course that could help me help those who are facing similar challenges. And I found it in law; that is why I did law.”
