Justina Wamae pokes holes into Ruto’s broad-based govt

By , May 18, 2025

2022 Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has poked holes into the country’s political landscape and party policies.

Issuing a statement via her official X account on Sunday, May 18, 2025, Wamae pointed out that leaders who merge parties are united in ideas, therefore, one cannot claim to be in government and play opposition.

“Mergers and coalition of political parties means all your ideas are consolidated, you cannot be in the government when speaking in English and in the opposition when given a chance to speak in Gikuyu,” she said.

Wamae’s remarks seem to be a direct jab at Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders who joined President William Ruto’s administration to form a broad based government.

Since the grand agreement, ODM leader Raila Odinga’s allies from the oppoistion have continued to joined government, further narrowing the walls between the government and opposition.

Once a fierce critic of government, Raila has continued to defend the broad-based arrangement with the ruling regime, insisting that ODM is not in government.

Raila has continously stated that the Kenyan system of government allows for a partnership between the opposition and the government without a formal agreement.

He compares Kenya’s administration to that of the United States, noting that it includes officials from both main political parties, the Democratic and Republican.

“We agreed that as the ODM party, we will have a partnership with the government, but that is not to mean we are in government. For example, in the US, it is the republican side running the government; they used to have the democratic government under Joe Biden,” Raila says.

“Biden had some ministers who were from the Republican Party. Likewise, even Trump has some ministers who are the the Democratic Party, and there is no coalition between the two parties, and they are running a presidential system government where there is no opposition or government benches. We have parliament as an institution, which oversees the government.”

Adding;

The executive implements policies as parliament passes laws, which the executive uses to govern the country and the judiciary that interprets the laws. So there is no coalition between ODM and UDA. It is an agreement based on an MoU signed between us.”
