Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Postmortem for Albert Ojwang’

A postmortem examination for Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Government and other independent bodies are expected to be present to observe the exercise.

This examination is important because people are demanding answers about what happened, and it could lead to calls for justice.

Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting

The Central Bank of Kenya is holding its Monetary Policy Committee meeting. This group decides on interest rates and other financial policies that affect the economy, like how much it costs to borrow money.

There is also a special amendment suggesting more money (Ksh4.46 billion) for 11 smaller counties, like Lamu and Nyamira. This debate is crucial for ensuring counties have enough funds to serve their people.

2025/2026 Budget Estimates

Meanwhile, the National Assembly is tackling the 2025/2026 Budget Estimates, a critical plan to fund government operations.

Tuesday, June 10, 2025, marks the final day of general debate on the Budget and Appropriations Committee’s report, with votes on allocations like Ksh387.18 billion for the Teachers Service Commission and Ksh213.32 billion for the Ministry of Defence.

A procedural motion to extend the sitting ensures every vote, from the Executive Office of the President (Ksh5.37 billion) to the National Police Service (Ksh127.09 billion), is finalised.

These decisions will directly affect education, security, health, and infrastructure across Kenya.

Senate Motions on public petitions

The Senate will discuss several reports based on petitions from Kenyans. These include a petition by Laban Omusundi about creating a way to remove nominated county assembly members (MCAs), and another by Christine Njoki Mweru about the disappearance of Joshua Gichuki Mwangi.

Africa Public Service Day (APSD) 2025 kicks off

Kenya is starting a three-day celebration of Africa Public Service Day at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, running from June 10, 2025, to June 12, 2025.

The day marks the opening, with government offices and counties showcasing new ideas to improve public services, like digital tools and better access for all.

National symposium

As part of the Africa Public Service Day events, a national symposium will start at the KICC. Public servants, experts, and academics will talk about how to make government services more responsive and inclusive. They’ll share examples from Kenya and other countries, focusing on using technology and new ideas to help people, especially those in marginalised areas.
