Madaraka Day
President William Ruto is set to lead the nation in the commemoration of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.
The annual national event observing the nation’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963 will be held in the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County, a town strategically located on the shores of Lake Victoria.
The county has been touted as a fitting venue for the 62nd edition of the celebrations held under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.”
Slovenian President Pirc Musar, who is on a historic state visit to Kenya, will be the guest of honour at the celebrations.
Thousands of residents were recorded occupying various sitting places within the stadium on the eve of the event in anticipation of the historic day.

The 20,000 seater facility that has undergone a massive facelift in preparation for the celebrations was reported to have been filled to capacity by midnight on Sunday, June 1, 2025, after security officers deployed in the area were compelled to open the gates at around 9:30 pm for the residents who had started queuing as early as 7 pm.
Sunday’s celebrations will mark the culmination of President Ruto’s four-day tour of the Nyanza region that started with his arrival in Kisumu on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
Release of Rose Njeri
Calls for the unconditional release of Rose Njeri are also expected to dominate the news headlines this Sunday, June 1, 2025.
Njeri, a middle-aged digital marketer and software developer, was on Friday, May 30, 2025, arrested and detained at Pangani Police Station for creating an online platform for Kenyans to submit their views on the Finance Bill 2025.
Her detention since has elicited widespread outrage among activists and legal experts, with the #FreeRoseNjeri hashtag trending in the best part since her arrest.
Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana are prominent persons who have voiced their concern over the continued detention of the lady.
Politicians in churches
Political leaders across the country are expected to flock to different churches for worship, and as per the norm, they might take to the pulpit to make various remarks.
The continued camaraderie between the president and Raila Odinga during the ongoing tour of the Nyanza region is a topic the opposition allied politicians are likely to weigh in on.
