Judge urges Egerton management, staff to bury the hatchet

Employment and Labor Relations court judge David Nderitu has advised Egerton University to resolve disputes between the institution and staff to ensure a conducive learning environment for students.
While delivering his judgment on a case between the institution and the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), Justice Nderitu observed that the university risked collapse if the two groups continued to wrangle.
Nderitu noted that the university had constantly been in the news in recent years for the wrong reasons.
He said the poor relations between stakeholders in the institution had affected the running of the university.
“The recent cases have shown failures in the administration and employees to sit and resolve their cases. It is time for the people involved to engage in talks and resolve the dispute. It will be unfortunate if the institution crumbles,” he said.
Justice Nderitu (pictured) declined to rule whether a November 15, 2021 strike by Egerton University Academic Staff Union (UASU) was legal or not saying it would be un-procedural for the court to rule on the legality of the strike since it was not pleaded in a claim filed on January 18, 2022.
