Joy as potholes-filled Githurai-Mwihoko road is fixed

Users of potholes-filled Githurai-Mwihoko road in Ruiru, Kiambu County can afford a smile after the road was recarpeted ending years of recurrent traffic snarl-ups.

The busy road was closed for over five hours on Sunday to allow for repair of the road that connects the populous Githurai town to Eastern bypass.

The road users led by tuktuk drivers and motorbike riders have been agitating for repair of the derelict road that has not only resulted in accidents but has also led to mechanical breakdown of vehicles.

Led by John Mwangi Muriithi, the road users said that they have been contributing their own money to temporarily repair the road that has been in bad shape to facilitate smooth movement of people and goods.

Mwangi said that motorists had organized protests against delay to repair the deplorable road but their plan was stalled after area MP Simon King’ara promised to have it fixed.

“We have been gone deep down our pockets to regularly prepare this road and even planned demos at some point until the MP intervened,” said Mwangi.

They further decried having suffered huge losses in terms of businesses due to delay experienced as motorists waded through the huge potholes.

King’ara through his foundation spearheaded the recarpeting exercise on Sunday putting to an end recurrent traffic and accident struggles for the road users.

The MP who spoke during the exercise said that his foundation will spend between Sh 5 to Sh 10 million for the exercise that will also see installation of modern drainage systems.

King’ara insisted on the need to have the road fixed for smooth movement of goods, saying that it connected Githurai with other constituencies in the eastern parts of Kenya.

“This is a very important road as it links different constituencies and our people have been losing business due to it’s former state. We’re doing everything possible to source for funds to add new layers of tamarck on it for better movements,” he said.
