Joho signs blue economy and fisheries MoU with Oman

Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) between Kenya and the government of the Sultanate of Oman.

In a statement on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Joho says the signed MoU advances Kenya and Oman’s partnerships in the Blue Economy and Fisheries.

“My mission to Oman culminated in the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Kenya and the Government of the Sultanate of Oman. His Excellency Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi ( @badralbusaidi), the Foreign Minister, signed the MoU on behalf of the Sultanate of Oman. This MoU advances our mutual interests and partnerships in the blue economy and fisheries,” Joho said.

The CS, in addition, stated that the MoU outlines areas of cooperation such as information exchange, research and technology, capacity building for fish farmers, and trade and investment in fisheries and the blue economy, with Kenya set to benefit significantly from Oman’s advancements in this sector.

“Areas of cooperation outlined in the MoU include, but are not limited to, the exchange of information, research and technology, capacity building for fish farmers, trade and investment in fisheries and the blue economy. Kenya stands to gain greatly from this collaboration, particularly given the advancements made by the Sultanate of Oman in this sector,” he said.

He further disclosed that he has instructed the Blue Economy and Fisheries Principal Secretary, to expedite the development of an implementation framework.

“I have instructed the Blue Economy and Fisheries Principal Secretary Ms. @PS_Betsy_Njagi, who witnessed the signing, to expedite the development of an implementation framework with her counterpart. Also present during the signing were Transport PS Mr.@mohamed_daghar, @Kenya_Ports Chairman Hon. @DaluTayari, H.E. Ambassador Abdi Aden Korio and the Kenya National Shipping Line Ltd Managing Director Abdallah Hatimy,” he added.

Joho’s visit to Oman

On February 17, 2025, Joho attended the 8th Indian Ocean Conference held in Muscat, Oman, where he emphasized the need for a joint framework to strengthen maritime security, intelligence sharing, maritime education, research and enforcement of applicable environmental laws.

According to the CS, the conference provided a platform for nations to discuss joint strategies to sustain the production of fisheries, enhance trade corridors, ensure freedom of navigation, foster environmental sustainability, and leverage technological advancements for port security and governance.

“Today(Feb 17, 2025), during the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat, Oman, I presented the Kenyan position on what needs to be done to strengthen maritime partnerships in the Indian Ocean region,” Joho wrote on his official X account.
