Joe Nyutu: Why would govt allow Rigathi to stage-manage attacks?
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, January 29, 2026Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has faulted the government following repeated attacks on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua while attending church functions.
Speaking at a local TV station on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Nyutu disputed claims that the former deputy president has been stage-managing his own attacks and disruption of his meetings, posing a question of why the government would not stop him from doing so.
“They keep saying Rigathi Gachagua’s attacks are stage-managed. Why are they allowing anybody to stage-manage something that causes mayhem and stress to children, women, and elderly people? Why haven’t the police made any arrests?” he posed.

Nyutu has further noted that security in Kenya is accorded on need or on a risk basis, and therefore, if the government feels that the DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua is at risk or his close allies and the people he visits at functions, then the government should provide enough security in such functions. The senator has called on the government to arrest the people who may be stage-managing the arrests.
Series of attacks on churches
Sentiments from Nyutu follow an incident that happened on Sunday, January 28, 2026, during a church service at Wairima ACK Church in Othaya, where police fired tear gas inside the church, causing panic among worshippers. Chaos followed as people scrambled for safety. Some witnesses claimed officers fired live bullets outside the church, while several vehicles were vandalised. Gachagua and several leaders were trapped inside the church for some time before their security teams managed to evacuate them.

Gachagua and his close allies in the United Opposition have been complaining of security threats at churches and public gatherings while accusing state agencies of targeting him, claims the government has consistently denied. The DCP party leader, in a statement, called on the international community to intervene into te matter, saying that his life is now in danger of assassination by the government.
