January 30, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Ruto in Egypt
President William Ruto is in Egypt for a two-day state visit, and his engagements while in the North African country will be keenly followed.
Ruto left for Egypt on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, and also met with his host, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, where both discussed conflicts in Africa, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo crisis.
“Conflicts in Africa have led to loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of property and livelihoods.
“On this account, it is urgent that we work together to bring an end to these clashes, silence the guns, and bring back peace and stability – especially in Sudan, Somalia, and the Eastern DRC – for the continent’s sustainable development.
“Thanked President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for his central role in peace efforts in Somalia, Sudan, and the Middle East,” Ruto said after addressing a joint press conference with El-Sisi.
His engagements on Thursday, January 30, 2025, will also be followed keenly.
Mudavadi’s engagements
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is also in Egypt, and he held an engagement with Kenyans living there.
“In Cairo, Egypt, alongside President William Ruto, we had an inspiring conversation with Kenyans in the Diaspora who are making remarkable strides in various fields.
“I applauded their dedication and the immense impact of their contributions, particularly through Diaspora remittances, now the leading source of foreign income for Kenya. The billions of shillings they send home are not just numbers; they are transforming lives, uplifting families, and driving progress in villages across the country.
“I encouraged them to uphold the Kenyan spirit of hard work, resilience, and discipline in their daily endeavours. As our ambassadors abroad, their success continues to shape Kenya’s global image and strengthen our international partnerships,” Mudavadi, who left for Egypt ahead of Ruto, said.
Transfer updates
The January transfer is open, and football fans are expected to follow updates around their clubs keenly.
Arsenal fans will be particularly interested in news around Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. Reports indicate the Gunners’ official bid has been rejected, and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta did not respond to the issue when asked.
“I can’t talk about any of that. My confidence is that we have an amazing club with people always working to try and improve. Let’s see what happens,” Arteta is quoted as saying by Sky News.
Mathys Tel’s transfer rumours will also attract significant attention because English top clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be interested in the teenager.

Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed Tel wants to leave, according to Sky Germany.
The 19-year-old forward had wanted to stay and fight for his place in the team but has since had a change of heart.
Eberl confirmed after the Slovan Bratislava victory: “We spoke in December, and Mathys said he wanted to assert himself.
“Now he has said he would like to leave. Now we have to think about whether we will do it and what we will do.”
Chelsea have always been interested in the teenager this month, but Tottenham are also thought to be among those exploring a move for the France U21 international.
