Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Ruto Meru tour
President William Ruto will today embark on the final leg of his three-day tour of Meru county where he is launching different development projects.
Ruto’s final day in Meru comes on the heels of a chaotic rally on Friday where a section of rowdy youth jeered and disrupted the presidential function.
The President began his tour of Meru on Thursday, January 25, 2024, launching several development projects and also engaged in discussions with the county leadership.
Raila Coastal tour
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga will today wind up his 6-day tour of the Coastal region as he sets up camp in Mombasa.
Raila’s tour has so far seen him visit Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta counties.
The visit is meant to bolster the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) political base in the Coastal region.
Today Mombasa governor Abdullswamad Nassir hosts his party leader Raila at Makanda Primary School where they will preside over the registering of new ODM members.
AFCON
Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) enters knockout rounds with mouthwatering fixtures.
16 national teams qualified for the knockout stage after nearly two weeks of group action which culminated with eight teams being sent packing.
Two more African heavyweights will collide today when Nigeria meets Cameroon. Both teams had uneven group stages but remain continental powerhouses.
Nigeria are considered the favourite in today’s match as Cameroon failed to impress in the group stage – recording a single win, a loss and a draw.
The other qualification match for today will see Namibia take on Angola.
Namibia made history by qualifying for the knockout stage for the first time in their history since debuting in 1998. They now face a strong Angola who topped group D which comprised Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
