January 14, 2024: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

New fuel prices

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is set to announce new fuel prices for the period between January 25 and February 14, 2024.

On December 14, 2023, EPRA announced new prices, reducing the retail prices of Super Petrol by Ksh5, diesel by Ksh2 and kerosene by Ksh4 per litre.

Following the reduction, the price of Super Petrol in Nairobi is now Ksh212.36, Diesel is retailing at Ksh201.47 whereas Kerosene now costs Ksh.199.05 per litre.

Kenyans are anticipating good news of a fall in prices following President William Ruto’s promise that the prices would fall further in January.

EPL

The English Premier League (EPL) showdown continues on Sunday, January 14, 2024, for Matchday 21 with two games scheduled for the day.

Everton will face Aston Villa in the first match of the day at 5:00 pm while the biggest duel of the day will see Manchester United fight for points against Tottenham Hotspurs.

Africa Cup of Nations

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament enters Day 2 on Sunday, January 14, 2024, with three matches scheduled.

Nigeria will face Equatorial Guinea in the first match at 5:00 pm while Eqypt will battle it out against Mozambique at 8:00 pm.

Ghana will face Cape Verde at 11:00 pm in the last match of the day.

KPL

A total of seven matches will be played in the Kenya Premier League (KPL) on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

City Stars will face Posta Rangers while Nzoia Sugar will battle Shabana at the same time.

Muhoroni Youth will face AFC Leopards while Ulinzi Stars will play against KCB.

Bidco United will play against the Police FC while Tusker will reignite their rivalry against Sofapaka.

Muranga’a SEAL will play against Talanta.

All matches will be played at 3:00 pm.

Power outage in 5 counties

Kenya Power has announced scheduled electricity interruptions set to affect five counties on Sunday, January 14.

Machakos County will experience power outages in along Kiwi Road and surrounding regions.

Other places to be affected include Kyeni, Kowee, Kalurnoni, Keeni, Kithengathini, Vyulyo, Masii, Kauslcrigo, Muthetheni, Makutano Mwala, Weal+, Kivanclini, Mbiuni, Ghetoo, Wamunyu, Yatbui, Ikalassa, Tullis, Miondonl, SyokIsinga, Katangl, Bombe, Konyaata, Soku University, Kyua, and adjacent areas.

In Nakuru and Baringo County, similarly, the blackout will affect the entirety of Mogotio Town from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This includes Mogotio Westland, Little Friends Academy, KCB Mogotio, Mogotio Sub County Hospital & Offices, St. Mary’s Primary School, and adjacent customers.

In Kakamega County, the scheduled interruption will impact the Shikangania Factory area, including Shikangama Bum, Elckho, Shikot Market, Lumaini, Esumeiya, Ewamahumb, Etemesi, and adjacent areas.

In Kirinyaga County the areas around Plestana will experience power outage from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Residents in parts of PI Market, Main Highway Hotel, Wand Hotel, Mumbulni, Murinduko, Itangi, part of Togonye, Ikurungu, Mugambaclura, and adjacent areas will be affected.
