Investigator says police have evidence to charge Lali
An investigating officer in the death of Keroche Breweries heiress Tecra Mungai yesterday told a Nairobi court that they had evidence to charge Omar Lali with her murder.
Inspector Fredrick Odemba attached to CID headquarters told Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul during investigations, they noticed some inconsistencies with Omar’s report on what transpired leading to the death of Tecra who was his lover.
The witness told the inquest into the death that after noticing the inconsistencies, they embarked on knowing who Omar is and noticed that at one point, Tecra had feared for her life and called her parents to organise for her security.
He was testifying in the inquest into Tecra’s death in 2020 after allegedly falling at a holiday home in Lamu County.
Odemba told the court that they took over the file from their counterparts in Lamu.
“We conducted our investigation and made a decision to charge Lali with the murder of Tecra after getting evidence leading to her death,” said the witness.
He said after investigations, they forwarded the file to DPP who later gave them the go ahead to charge Omar with murder.
The officer told the court that later the DPP withdrew the murder charge and recommended an inquest which they filed before court.
During investigation, the officer told the court that they found out that Lali was a violent man who used to engage in fights with Tecra.
He said Lali informed them that on the material day he and Tecra drank beer in their house before he retired to bed, leaving the deceased still drinking.
He told the court at one point Tecra vowed to end the relationship with Lali, saying she was not happy with his behaviour.
