Intern teachers who were serving in the year 2022 can now breathe a sigh of relief after assurance that they will be absorbed on a permanent and pensionable basis, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed.
In a memo dated January 11, 2023, TSC director of staffing Joseph Mugele requested that the interns should not be removed from the payroll to ease the employment process under new terms.
“The interviews for the exercise commence on Friday, January 13 and recruitment documents are scheduled for February 6,” the memo reads in parts.
Earlier, the commission had announced 10,000 positions for teachers employed on permanent pensionable terms and 25,550 slots for interns to curb the shortage of teachers in the country.
“TSC invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” the statement read in parts.
Out of the positions available for teachers employed on pensionable terms 9,000 slots were meant for permanent secondary school teachers while the other 1,000 slots were for primary school teachers.
Similarly, out of the positions, meant for interns, 21, 550 slots are for intern teachers for junior secondary schools whereas the other 4,000 slots are set for primary school interns.
The vacancies announced aligned with President William Ruto’s directive to recruit 30,000 teachers for the academic year 2023.
“The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the TSC will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC,” the statement by the Head of State read in part.
