Seven dead, 120 houses torched after inter-community clashes break out in Trans Mara

Seven people have been confirmed dead in Isinya, Kajiado County, following a day-long chaos pitting two communities in Ongata Barikoi and Lolgorian Trans Mara South.

Confirming the incident, the Rift Valley Commissioner, Aldi Hassan, said over 120 houses were set ablaze during the recent clash, which left more than 260 families displaced.

The commissioner issued a stern warning to those fuelling the clashes, noting that there will be no sacred cows on matters of security. This comes as the police confirm the arrest of two people believed to be behind the incitement, even as they pursue 20 others who are on the run.

“We witnessed deadly clashes yesterday where 7 people lost their lives, and 120 houses were burnt, leaving over 260 homeless,” Commissioner Aldi said.

“We have arrested two main suspects helping us with investigations, even as we pursue 20 others who are on the run,” he added.

The RC also noted that an operation against illegal guns will be carried out for the time being, while calling on those in possession of illegal weapons to return them to the authorities.

The conflict

Hundreds of residents have sought refuge in nearby schools as tensions escalate in a conflict reportedly instigated by a land dispute. The renewed clashes have so far led to the destruction of properties worth millions.

Dr Aldi urged the residents to embrace peace and shun retaliatory attacks, noting that they will worsen the situation.

“I urge the residents here to embrace peace and dialogue as opposed to resorting to violence and clashes. The government offices are open for any burning issue residents have, and we will address it with the much-needed attention and urgency,” Aldi noted.

The commissioner took the opportunity to warn the political class and opinion leaders in the society not to escalate the matter out of proportion.

“I want to call upon leaders here to shun politicising this matter; instead, let us sit and dialogue about this matter for a lasting solution,” RC noted.
