Inside SHA transition to new medical cover for police and prison officers
The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced the transition of medical cover management for all officers within the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS).
In a statement on Monday, March 30, 2026, the authority revealed that effective 12:00 am on April 1, 2026, SHA will take over the administration of medical benefits for these officers and their eligible dependents under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.

“The Social Health Authority (SHA) informs all officers of the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), and their eligible dependants, that SHA will manage their medical cover effective 12:00 a.m. on 1st April 2026 under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund,” SHA wrote.
End on current cover
The current medical cover for these services will remain valid until 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2026, ensuring a back-to-back transition intended to prevent gaps in service.
The authority further stressed its commitment to a smooth and seamless transition. SHA is working with relevant institutions and healthcare providers to ensure a smooth and seamless transition, with no interruption in access to care.

The notice revealed that the critical component of this plan involves officers currently receiving treatment clarrifying that any officer or dependant already admitted to a hospital will continue their treatment without interruption under SHA starting April 1.
SHA-contracted facilities
For those receiving care in facilities not currently contracted by SHA, the authority has pledged to make appropriate arrangements to facilitate transfers to SHA-contracted facilities to ensure continuity of care.
“Where an officer or dependant is receiving treatment in a facility that is not contracted by SHA, appropriate arrangements will be made to facilitate transfer to a SHA-contracted facility for continuity of care,” SHA noted.

To facilitate access to these services, SHA has directed all officers to ensure their declared dependents are duly updated in the system.
“Officers to ensure that all declared dependants under their cover are duly updated to facilitate seamless access to services. To add dependants, dial *147# or visit www.sha.go.ke or www.afyayangu.go.ke,” SHA stated.
SHA has also designated liaison officers in all County Offices and established a dedicated hotline (0800 720 601) to handle inquiries regarding benefits and contracted hospitals
