Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning John Mbadi is in China for a series of high-level discussions with Chinese government officials.

Mbadi, who landed in China on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, is accompanied by Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo, advisors from the Executive Office of President David Ndii and Mohammed Hassan and senior Treasury officials.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the National Treasury revealed that the delegation was received at the Kenya Embassy by Ambassador Willy Bett and Deputy Ambassador Lynette Ndile.

The government says the visit seeks to strengthen Kenya’s diplomatic and economic ties with China, a key development partner that has significantly contributed to the country’s infrastructure growth.

“Over the past 25 years, China has invested over Kshs. 1.2 trillion (approximately US$9.2 billion) in Kenya, funding projects in transport, energy, and other critical sectors. While Chinese investments have played an important role in Kenya’s modernization, the government is keen on ensuring future partnerships are structured to maximize economic benefits, enhance value for money, and safeguard Kenya’s long-term fiscal sustainability,” the National Treasury stated.

“As a strategic gateway to Africa under the Belt and Road Initiative, Kenya remains committed to enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation with China—anchored on transparency, economic prudence, and sustainable development.”

The government says the discussions in Beijing will explore areas of enhanced collaboration while prioritizing Kenya’s economic interests, ensuring that future engagements align with the country’s broader fiscal and development goals.
