Indelible ink to be applied on right hand in Monday polls – IEBC

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) now says voters in eight regions set to go to the polls on Monday, August 29, will have indelible ink applied on the right hand to prevent electoral malpractice such as double voting.
Nyali constituency returning officer John Ole Taiswa said on Sunday the ink will be applied on the right hand’s small ‘pinky’ finger since the left hand was used in the August 9 general election.
According to the official, the ink is indelible (not removable easily) and will prevent anyone from voting more than once.
“We have created awareness amongst, our officials that they are required to mark the right-hand small finger of the voter to ensure there is no double voting since the other hand had been used to vote in the previous exercise,” the official said.
He noted that the ink used during the August 9 general elections was still on the voters’ fingers since it takes some time to fade.
IEBC ready for polls
Taiswa said the exercise to dispatch voting materials across 195 polling centres in Nyali had kicked off well.
“The exercise has begun well, no hitches have been witnessed so far and we expect the exercise to run smoothly,” he added.
IEBC is set to hold gubernatorial elections for Mombasa and Kakamega counties after postponing the exercise twice. Elections will also take place in six areas where the exercise had been suspended following a ballot mixup.
