Impeached Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mahamud has dismissed as unsubstantiated allegations levelled against him by the county assembly.

Mahamud on Wednesday said the impeachment case is politically motivated with malice and witch hunt urging the committee to dismiss it.

Appearing before the 11-member senate special committee probing his ouster, the governor said, in 45 years as a career Public Servant, he has never been suspected or accused of any charges relating to violation of the Constitution and other relevant laws.

“The charges levelled against me as the Governor, Wajir County are unsubstantiated, and cannot stand the scrutiny and threshold required for impeachment of a Governor,” he told the committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni.

“Wajir County under my leadership, has seen tremendous progress in basic social services with improvements in key performance indicators as can be witnessed from the County Statistics,” he added, saying that he will fully cooperate with the committee and help to establish the truth.

Abdi said that he transformed the county and forged a good working relationship with the county assembly since he was elected in 2017.

The governor asked the committee to look at the unique circumstances the Somali Community finds itself in its decision making and formation of governance structures in all its counties through negotiated democracy.

The governor made his case moments after the county assembly, led by senior counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi made a case to the committee to indict the governor.

“The governor must be taken out of the political equation in Wajir. The evidence is overwhelming. The facts speak for themselves,” Abdullahi said.
