Kericho Governor Mutai to sue County Assembly speaker over impeachment chaos
By Mabonga Makhanu, August 16, 2025Impeached Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has announced plans to take legal action against County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, whom he holds responsible for the chaos witnessed during his impeachment proceedings.
The dramatic events unfolded on Friday, August 15, 2025, when the governor was impeached in a heated session that later descended into disorder at the Kericho County Assembly.
Addressing the media shortly after the impeachment at Siloam Hospital, the former governor declared that the speaker would be held directly accountable for the disruption.
Mutai accused the speaker of presiding over what he described as one of the gravest travesties against an institution of governance, pointing out that no parliamentary body in the country should operate in the manner the Kericho County Assembly had conducted itself.

He stressed the need for a renewed conversation on how the assembly is run, insisting that it must be restructured to function effectively, respect the rule of law, and operate in line with other assemblies across the republic.
“For Patrick Mutai, we are going to have direct responsibilities for his actions; we are going to sue him; we are going to make him accountable for his actions, because this was the greatest travesty of any institution on earth.
“There is no parliament that operates in the way the Kericho assembly operates. It’s time we are going to have a conversation on the assembly of Kericho. We need to make it functional; we need to make it obey the rule of law, and we need to make it operate like other assemblies in this republic,” Mutai stated.
Injured MCA’s
The impeached governor further extended his wishes for a quick recovery to members of the assembly who were injured during the fracas. At the same time, he called on his supporters to remain calm as he pursued legal redress.

“In this regard we want to tell our members who were injured we wish them a quick recovery. To all our supporters, we ask you to be calm,” he added.
He has also blamed the speaker for being behind his woes and for using the impeachment to settle political scores with the governor.
According to Mutai, the speaker wants to vie for the gubernatorial seat, and by impeaching him, this will give him an easier race in 2027, with no worthy opponent to face.
This came after an overwhelming impeachment by the county assembly, where out of 47 MCAs, 33 voted in favour of the impeachment motion.
