Football Kenya Federation (FKF) latest presidential race entrant Herbert Mwachiro has distanced himself from national soccer boss Nick Mwendwa, saying he was not being fronted by anyone and vowed to put up a serious campaign based on his policies after the road map is published.

A section of local football stakeholders were fast to associate Mwachiro with Mwendwa after he declared his interest for the sport’s top job.

“I should be allowed to exercise my independence and rights as I  seek to lead the country’s football to the next level.

I think this is the right time for change. I may not have deep pockets like some of the aspirants seeking the same post, but voters will decide after seeing my policies.

I plan to release my blue print once the road map is published,” Mwachiro who was once the Deputy CEO at FKF told People Sport.

Meanwhile, Mwachiro lauded Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed for handing footballers  Sh 20 million on Tuesday to cushion them from the current coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s a great step from the Sports CS. It shows the government is listening and this is the kind of proactive leadership that the sports fraternity has been yearning for.

Setting up the fund and actualising the distribution of money to players within such a short notice is commendable.

This fund has come at a time when footballers have been having it rough and it’s impressive that the private sector has also heeded calls from the government.

It’s encouraging to hear that women football will also benefit and we hope other tiers of Kenyan football will also be considered in the near future,” he said.

He added: “The government is the biggest shareholder when it comes to social welfare and we as football stakeholders need to be on the same page with it moving forward to build a sustainable industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching us a lot of lessons key among them the need to prepare for rainy days.”
