Illegal firearm surrendered to police in Olmoran, Laikipia County
A member of the public in Laikipia County has voluntarily handed over an illegal AK-47 rifle to police, highlighting the role of communities in enhancing public safety.
According to a statement posted by the National Police Service (NPS) on its official X account on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the surrender took place at Olmoran Police Station, with the individual handing over an AK-47, one magazine, and three rounds of ammunition.
“A member of the public from the Luoniek area today voluntarily surrendered an illegal AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and three rounds of ammunition at Olmoran Police Station in Laikipia County,” the statement reads

The move comes amid ongoing efforts by the National Police Service (NPS) to curb the circulation of illegal firearms in the region.
The National Police Service praised the gesture, noting the importance of community cooperation in maintaining security.
“The National Police Service applauds the continued co-operation of local community members in the disarmament exercise and encourages others still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to the police,” the statement read.
Officials said the surrender underscores the critical role residents play in complementing law enforcement efforts, particularly in areas where illegal firearms pose a serious threat to safety and stability.
The NPS further called on the public to assist in locating and recovering other illegal weapons.
“We appeal to the public to provide any information that could assist in the recovery of more illegal firearms to the nearest police station or post, or anonymously through the toll-free hotlines,” the statement read.

Security experts have long emphasised that community participation is key in tackling illegal arms proliferation. Voluntary surrenders, such as the one in Olmoran, not only prevent potential criminal activity but also build trust between police and local residents.
The NPS continues to run disarmament drives across Laikipia and other counties, seeking to reduce the risk of armed violence. They encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunity to safely surrender illegal weapons, assuring anonymity and legal protections for those who come forward.
