IGAD rallies Horn of Africa with new year call for peace, unity and resilience
By Kiprono Keileb, December 31, 2025The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has delivered the new year with hope and unity, as the regional bloc reflects on a difficult past year and sets its priorities for the months ahead.
In a statement shared on X by IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, the organisation acknowledged the pressures facing the Horn of Africa while urging member states and citizens to remain committed to peace, cooperation and shared progress across the region.

“As we welcome a new year, we do so with renewed hope and shared purpose in our collective strength as a region,” the statement reads
The message comes at a time when several IGAD member countries continue to grapple with conflict, climate-related disasters and economic strain. From prolonged political instability to droughts and floods linked to climate change, communities across the region have faced repeated shocks. Despite these challenges, IGAD’s leadership says the past year has also highlighted the determination of ordinary people and the importance of standing together as neighbours with shared interests.
“The past year tested us in many ways, conflict, climate shocks, economic pressure,s yet it also revealed the resilience of our people and the enduring power of regional solidarity,” the statement reads

Looking ahead, IGAD says it will focus on practical actions that strengthen peace efforts, reduce vulnerability to future shocks and ensure that voices often left out of decision-making are heard. Women and young people, who make up a large share of the region’s population, are expected to play a central role in shaping policies and solutions under the bloc’s agenda for the new year.
“In the year ahead, IGAD remains firmly committed to advancing peace, strengthening resilience and amplifying the voices of women and youth who are shaping the region’s future. Together with our Member States and partners, we will continue to work for a region that is more secure, inclusive and hope for all,” the statement reads

As the new year begins, the message closes with an appeal that speaks to the daily realities of millions across the Horn of Africa, many of whom continue to live with uncertainty but also with hope for calmer days ahead.
“May the year ahead bring peace to our region and dignity to our people,” the statement reads
